    Description

This butter dish is beautifully silver plated, highly decorated in relief (3D), and jam-packed with a large menagerie of classic aesthetic movement motifs: birds, insects, plants, flowers, the sun, and spider webs, accompanied by geometric designs of lines, squares, triangles, and circles. The insects appear to be butterflies and dragonflies, and the two birds are a heron or crane and a tropical multi-tailed hummingbird.
The decoration forms a 1 1/4 inch band around the lower portion of the tiered cover, with a chased egg or oval decoration atop and below the band. An acorn shaped knob serves as the lid finial.
The bottom of the bowl features ribbed art deco style handles, with ribbing decoration also encircling the base of the dish. The inside of the piece (cover and bottom) are both undecorated.
The bottom of the dish includes the Simpson Hall Miller hallmark and the number ‘209’.
The piece is approximately 5 1/2 inches in total height (base to top of lid knob) and approximately 8 inches in total diameter (from outer handle to outer handle).
The inner bowl (where the butter or other food would be placed) is approximately 5 inches in diameter.
This piece is in good used condition. No major dents, dings, stains, or scratches. No breaks, or repairs. The lid has a few shallow dents that do not detract from the look of the piece (see photos). The inside of the base shows minor scratching and pitting typical of a used piece of silver plate.
Note: the Aesthetic movement ran from approximately 1860 to 1890. Silver hollowware pieces such as this dish featured designs such as nature motifs, simple lines, and Asian-inspired imagery. The
Simpson Hall Miller (SHM) company was
founded in Connecticut in 1866. A number of SHM designs are in nationally known museums and art galleries.
